San San Pond Sak

Isthmian Adventures is partnering with AAMVECONA (Friends and Neighbors of the Coast and Nature Association) a community based organization that operates within the 16,125 hectares of the San San Pond Sak Ramsar Site, to offer a unique experience of nature and conservation.

Located in Bocas del Toro, next to the City of Changuinola on the Costa Rican border, the protected area is an important habitat for an incredible diversity of flora and fauna, with conservation efforts focused on two critically endangered species: manatees and sea turtles. In addition to these two, 36 other endangered bird species; 24 endangered mammal species and 7 endangered reptile species also depend on this wetland for survival. This wetland and its health influence marine areas and some of the most important rivers of the region, such as the Changuinola, San San, and Sixaola.

Due to its vital importance, the area was designated a protected wetland in 1994 (Resolution 020-94 JD, August 2, 1994) and is part of the National System of Protected Areas of Panamá (SINAP). Furthermore, in 1998, this wetland became part of the La Amistad Biosphere Reserve (RBLA), along with La Amistad International Park, Volcan Baru National Park, Wetland Volcanic Lagoons, Fortuna Forest Reserve, Isla Bastimentos National Marine Park, and Palo Seco Reservation. The wetland is also a designated site to of international importance under the Ramsar Convention, also known as “The Convention on Wetlands, by UNESCO. Its protection is of vital importance for Panama and our planet.

This amazing adventure brings you close and personal with manatees, nesting sea turtles and other wildlife as you learn about the importance of their ecosystem and meet the community members involved in the many efforts to preserve it.

Rio Cañas, Ngäbe-Bugle Comarca

Custodians of Nature/Multiday Programa

Isthmian Adventures is partnering with Meri Eko Kika, a group of female entrepreneurs that includes artisans, dancers, and other female members of the Río Cañas community in the Ngäbe-Bugle comarca, that offer services such meals, lodging and more.  Together we developed and manage the operations of this community-based, life changing experience for adventure travelers.

In addition to our partnership with Meri Eko Kika, Isthmian Adventures also works closely with other conservation organizations and researchers such as, Cristina Ordoñes of the Sea Turtle Conservancy and Josue Ortega, of Smitshsonian Tropical Research Institute, whom is studying the mammals on the island of Escudo de Veraguas and their volunteers as part of the experience.

This multi-day program focuses on one of the most remote areas of the Isthmus of Panamá. Accessible only by foot or boat, the location of Rio Cañas is often isolated for a great part of the year due to extremely rough seas and weather. Due to these conditions, this program can only be enjoyed safely during two months of September and October, when the winds are calm, the sun is out, and scenery is spectacular.

It introduces you to the cultural and natural heritage of Río Cañas, its surrounding areas and their people. The locations we visit, the nature we encounter and the people of Río Cañas makes this experience an unforgetable one.
